The rules of the two-team form

Other rule sets: 1

The court

A rectangular court divided by a centre line into two equal halves. Each team takes one.

About three metres from the centre on each side an attack line is drawn.

The start

The balls are laid out along the centre line. The teams stand at the far edges of their halves.

At the signal both sides run to the centre for the balls. A ball taken in this rush must first be carried back behind your own attack line before it may be thrown.

Hits

A player is out if a thrown ball hits them before touching the ground, a wall or anything else, if they cross the centre line, or if they step over a sideline.

A ball that has touched anything stops putting players out until it is thrown again.

Catching

A ball caught cleanly puts the thrower out, and the catcher's team brings back one player who is out — the one who went out earliest.

Try to catch and drop it, and you are out yourself.

Blocking

An incoming ball may be blocked with a ball held in the hands. If the block knocks your own ball out of your hands, you are out.

Holding on

A ball may not be held for longer than ten seconds: it must be thrown or rolled to the opponents. If a team gathers every ball and does not put them back into play, they are given a short count and the surplus is taken away.

Winning

A game ends when one team has nobody left in the field. A match runs to an agreed number of games won.

Worth knowing

The number of balls, the size of the court, whether a catch brings a teammate back and what counts as a headshot are all set beforehand and answered differently by different companies.

Glossary of terms
Catch

Life
The right to survive one hit. Lives accumulate through catches.
